US Visa Photo Requirements: What's the 2x2 Inch Square Format?
For visa (DS-160) and passport applications, the US uses a photo standard completely different from most European countries: square, not rectangular.

| Digital format | Uploaded to DS-160 as JPEG, minimum 600x600 px recommended |
The US State Department's (travel.state.gov) photo requirements are updated from time to time. Confirm the current spec on the official site right before you apply.
Why Is It Different?
While the US adopts ICAO's general principles, its own visa system (DS-160) requires a distinct digital format and square composition. A photo shot for a Schengen application won't be accepted for a US application.
